We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. -T.S. Elliot

    Individual Psychotherapy

    Children & Adolescents

Being a kid is hard- something we often forget as adults. Figuring out how to handle confusing thoughts and feelings, complex social relationships, opportunities for independence, and stressful social demands can lead a child/teenager to lash out, withdraw, or both, causing pain to themselves and other important people in their lives. My work with both children and adolescents, while adjusted for age and level of development, involves an exploration of the themes mentioned above. Through play and conversation we will address the kinds of difficulties that have led to therapeutic intervention in the first place: anxiety, sadness, disengagement, defiance, conflict, identity, confusion, anger. The young person and I will then work towards a determination of why they suffer, what they can do about it, and what kind of a person they wish to be. This work is intensive, and if undertaken in good faith can lead to remarkable growth.

    Adults

Being a grown up isn't easy, either. One's experiences in childhood serve as the foundation of who they become as an adult, contributing to their greatest successes and their most harrowing defeats. One's past also sets the stage for how they deal with their day to day life: handling demands made on them by their relationships with others, understanding and responding to their painful emotional experiences, figuring out who they are and who they wish to be, and striving to make sense of their lives. My work with adults in psychotherapy addresses these themes using the therapeutic relationship as a vehicle to foster exploration of a person's life experience. We will work to make sense of what has led them to experience particular troubles, how they might evolve their ways of handling painful experiences, what personal strengths and talents they can mobilize to achieve this, and what this all means to their understanding of who they are as a person in relationships with other people. As explained above this work is intensive, and if done with a genuine desire to know one's self and one's relationships more fully can be transformative.

    Consultation & Supervision

Work with people who are experiencing significant emotional trouble is complicated; however it can be tremendously rewarding to both therapeutic participants. When doing this work it is essential to have adequate clinical support, both to learn more about the therapeutic process and to better understand oneself as a clinician. My years of experience working with this population has prepared me to assist individuals and organizations who are interested in more clearly recognizing the motivations, experiences, and strengths of children, adolescents and adults with profound struggles. I approach this process with a vibrant and collaborative style, and respect the consultory/supervisory relationship as I do the relationship between therapist and patient.
